Week 2 - Class Tutorials

Smoothing Groups

This week in class we learnt some new techniques that will help modelling for our animation. The first tutorial is about smoothing groups, it allows a shape to be smoothed without having to use a turbosmooth modifier which greatly increases the amount of polygons and render time.

We firstly made a sphere in the work area and scrolled down to remove the smoothing group that is on the sphere, once this has been turned off the smoothness is removed and the sphere shows it's polygons when rendered.

I then selected the top half of the sphere and added a smoothing group of 1 to the selected polygons, i then rendered it to show that the top half has been smoothed leaving the bottom half still showing the original polygons.

This technique is useful for adding lines that give objects more detail, i will be using this technique when adding smoothing groups to my planes wings and tail section to make it look as if the plane has been joined together.

To make the line i selected the remaining polygons on there own and added a smoothing group of 2 to the sphere, this adds a line round the center of the sphere where the two smoothing groups meet. I then rendered the sphere to show wh
at it would look like.

If i want to make the whole sphere smooth again, i need to select the polygons which are on each side of the line, by then giving it a smoothing group of 3 the sphere is completely smoothed again. To make it easier on i could've selected all the polygons on the sphere and removed all the smoothing groups to bring the sphere back to it's original polygon state, but if i then reselected all the polygons added smoothing group 1 again, the sphere is completely smooth.

Quick Slice  (Low Poly Modelling)

Quickslice is a very useful tool for making low poly models, especially modelling buildings. For this tutorial we used the quickslice tool to make a low poly face of a building.

We firstly added a plane to the work area and added the bitmap file of a building to the plane using the material editor, and changed it to an editable poly.

Then by using the quickslice tool on the scroll down menu added lines to each segment of the building where it would be further out from the windows

I then highlighted each polygon that i wanted to extrude

Once the relevant polygons are selected i then used the extrude tool to bring parts of the building away from the plane to give the building a more 3 dimensional shape.

We will be using this tool to make our buildings as it is as quick modelling technique as we are on a tight timescale.
